Drs.
Shannon and Kevin Pursel announced that Pursel Dental, P.C.,
has converted to digital X-ray. For years, the medical
community has relied on digital imaging to make diagnostic
information more accessible and more valuable. Now it is
available, and is becoming increasingly popular, in dental
offices. Digital X-ray, or Digital Radiography, offers some
distinct advantages over traditional film X-rays. Foremost
is reduced radiation exposure, by as much as 90%, which
makes dental X-ray taking safer and calms patient fears
about radiation exposure.
Digital X-ray generates pictures that are diagnostically
equivalent to film based images, without some of the
inconsistencies of film. A collection of powerful image
enhancement tools allows remarkable viewing options. These
tools allow zooming, brightness and contrast control,
colorization, and a whole host of other enhancement
features. The images also can be transmitted electronically
for either insurance purposes or to another doctor involved
in treatment.
Digital X-ray is also environmentally friendly. The sensors
and plates used do not contain lead foil, like traditional
dental film, that needs to be recycled or disposed of as
hazardous waste. Also, there are no chemicals or water
involved in generating an image, reducing pollution and
water consumption. In fact, this technology is so
environmentally friendly that Pursel Dental has been
approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental
Protection and the Department of Community and Economic
Development for low interest funding through the Pollution
Prevention Assistance Account.
The Pursel’s are using two systems, one a hard-wired sensor
placed directly in the patients mouth, and the other a
sensor plate that takes the place of film. The combination
of the two systems allows them to take all their X-rays
digitally and, with the hard-wired sensor, even generate
instant images. Most people find the plates and sensor to be
more comfortable than traditional dental film.
“Patient’s really enjoy being able to actually see their
X-rays on the computer screen, I think it helps them to
understand their condition better and gets them involved in
making treatment decisions,” Dr. Pursel states, “ and it is
a valuable teaching tool. Our team appreciates it too! They
no longer have to run back and forth to the darkroom,
leaving them more time for patient care, and they aren’t
constantly exposed to the chemicals.”
